Amanda Brugel

Image
Brugel is the only Canadian member of the Season 1 cast. She was seen only on occasion. Since then, she has been a member ever since. In response to questions about her character on the show, and whether there was any parallels with her life prior to the screen, Brugel explained that she drew on her own experiences with racism to relate to the way Marthas are considered. "I do not just apply the same experience in her position as a Martha but also, as I said, it's my previous experiences when I feel like I'm being stifled due to race in certain situations." Although I have never experienced physical violence because of my skin color however, I have certainly experienced the verbal abuse. Any sort of racial slurs that have felt like a hit, or a blow to me, can be used on the set when someone uses words that are tough and painful. The effect is similar to punching the character in every scene.
